My passion is to breed and train brittanys to be excellent hunting dogs that can also be successful in field trials and hunt tests. For non-hunters my dogs will fit into any household that offers an active lifestyle. Good bird dogs or working dogs of any breed need access to the outdoors, leadership from their owners, and training activities that provide purpose.
Ely Mountain Approach
Handling a finished bird dog effectively reflects technical skill and knowledge from both the dog and handler. But technical skill is not enough to realize the full joy that comes from working with a well-trained dog in the field. The true magic flows from the relationship and teamwork between the dog and handler. The true magic happens when the dog reads the handler and the handler reads the dog in relation to the birds and cover. These moments bring a deep appreciation for the drive, natural abilities, intelligence, and athleticism of a good dog.
My approach begins with listening to you about your dog, your observations, experiences with the dog and your thinking about handling and training. You are half of the dog/human team. A good gun dog owner needs to be reflective and learn to give the dog what it needs to perform well. Thus, part of my training program involves you and me learning about your dog, its strengths and areas that need support. As I work with your dog, I will share my observations of what seems to work to improve your dog's performance.
I am also interested in your dog's pedigree. Most people who don't breed or trial dogs find pedigrees a confusing jumble of acronyms. I will explain the information and what I notice, including any information about any related dogs that I have seen in field trials.
Traning Programs
My primary intention is to provide training for dogs from my breeding program. I will train other dogs that exhibit a desire to hunt. The three programs described below run from March through August.
1) The puppy program is for dogs ages five to seven months. This work will require three to four weeks. The puppy program builds a strong foundation for developing a "finished" gundog. The program begins with basic commands, whistle training, very early retrieving work, and initial birdwork. The dogs will receive daily training and conditioning, exposure to other dogs, house manners, and time for fun.
2) The consultation program allows you to work with me to learn what is involved in meeting the needs that you have with your dog. It is hands on. Whenever possible I will use my dogs to demonstrate finished skills and the steps involved in achieving those skills. You and I will work directly with your dog and begin to move the dog toward the skills you desire. You will leave with a personal plan to implement in the continued training of your dog. I will also suggest equipment and the proper training environment. Consultation sessions are three hours.
3) The pointing program advances dogs with some basic skills to the level of a finished gun dog. This will require 3-4 months depending on the skills the dog brings to the work. The dog will learn to be under the command of the handler while also showing independence in the field. The dog will point and remain steady from "wing to shot." Depending on the dog's progress, the program will advance retrieving skills on land and water and begin the process of "honoring" another dog on point. Again, the dogs will receive daily training and conditioning and refreshers to basic commands.
Facilities
Our training area includes two fields, a pond, and 70 forested acres on Ely Mountain in Fairlee, Vermont. Our land holds wild grouse and woodcock and includes an area with a bird release pen. Our land abuts 200 acres of conservation land, and I have access to thousands of nearby acres in New Hampshire. When not being trained or conditioned, dogs will be in runs with their own crates. Your dog will also spend time in our home.
